[sticky entry] Sticky: The Basics

I suppose it's time for a pinned post.

I'm Ari, on the internet; some people have begun to know me by my name of choice but that is a very small number. I'll also respond to Puck, because college granted me that nickname for a multitude of reasons and I've grown rather fond of it. I use he/him or they/them pronouns. I have chronic pain problems and am neurodivergent. To gain a diagnosis for any of that stuff, however, requires doctors to listen to me first. We'll see if that ever happens.

Rules of the journal are pretty simple: respect others when respect is due. Stay civil when possible; when impossible, don't bother trying. Don't cater to anyone devaluing another life on a basis outside of the victim's control, and when it appears to be in the victim's control, proceed with caution.

I'm unlikely to grant access to anyone, for the simple reason that I am forgetful and would put absolutely everything public anyways. Due to a currently iffy situation re:family, many things have had to be shifted to access lock for safety reasons. This is currently just a precaution, but if I don't immediately grant you access, don't take it personally. Stuff's weird right now. Anyone is welcome to subscribe, however, and I'll likely do the same in return.

Bardic Bingo

Inspired by the speech given here, I made a list of some of the basic categories in filk and SCA music, only the very basic stuff but enough that I can have some inspiration to write more music, maybe find where I'm fitting in style-wise. And then I made a bingo card of it.

The list itself, very out of order as of yet: ghost story, lullaby, Arthurian legend, love song, fight song, SCA home group, Robin Hood, Greek myths, Norse myths, Celtic myths, Kiple, space opera, origins of a Disney story, ballad, personal origin story, sailing song, drinking song, scary mythical creatures, funny mythical creatures, traditional lyrics with new tune, traditional tune with new lyrics, favorite holiday, winter holidays, instrumental with a story, revenge, parody your own piece, absolute nonsense, computers, food, sf television / movies, favorite animals, rock song, fantasy television / movies, LOTR, hope for the future, fantasy books, sf books.

My bingo card, via the Bingo Generator here:

I'm currently working on I4 (fantasy movie) and G5 (Kiple), with some ideas for a sailing song and Arthurian legend piece. This card will probably last me at least until the end of the year, though.

Update 11/20/18: beginning to put strikethroughs on completed prompts with annotations of which song filled it. Not all are posted by the time of strikethrough, but they exist in draft form which counts as good enough by me.

Update 2/13/19: including partially done ones now, just to keep track. And eek I have a LOT.

Update 3/3/19: first line complete. Working towards blackout now.

Very much still around; words are just hard. Neuro stuff is bad nowadays, waiting on diagnosis. Service dog in training is more help than doctors. Commenting may occasionally happen, spoons permitting; posts are unlikely except for lyrics, at least until I can get effective meds, treatment, etc. Still reading & catching up most days. Username finally changed (out of my parents' reach for a year, just haven't had spoons to do the changeover). Very much still me.

A rather odd request...

Update, copy found!

This may be the weirdest CanIHazPDF style request I'll ever put out, but uh, does anyone happen to have a copy of From Antarctica to Outer Space: Life in Isolation and Confinement (the end result of NASA & the Polar Programs folks getting bored and having a conference back in 1987) tucked away somewhere? A new copy is upwards of $100, and all I'm using it for is SF novel research, so I can't really justify the cost, but I'd happily borrow/rent it from somebody who has a copy. (Crossposting to various places, just in case.)

Poison Control

Oops. This one was originally from around February 2019, and inspired by a Massfilc list discussion of hydrogen peroxide where I was the only one who thought to *look up* the point in question... but these lyrics didn't actually get finished until tonight, when Current Events intervened and Emily Lewis giggled at the thought of it in the Balticon Zoom room. I repeat, oops.

So this happened in a Zoom filk circle, just now. Typoed off of "rumblings".

RABBIT

The rendition of choice for this year: a very good Rickroll.

April Fools'

Standard yearly reminder that I will be posting a Rickroll, because that is, in my opinion, the extent of what April Fools' should be. (I have a quota of Nonsense I am obligated to meet each year to quiet my brain, and this is one of those things. Speedfilking is another.)

How I just taught myself Psi Nought and nearly memorized it, despite it being late at night and me being exhausted (though not sleepy):

There's a *field* in the *state* of RI, and the field has one of those portable electric fences that's effectively *string*. A bug lands on the string and produces a *wave*.

Meanwhile, *Quark* the ant is trying to crawl along the wire but is getting disoriented from the wave and accidentally ends up electrocuted, the *charge* passing through them. They feel the *force* of it and fall to the ground, their *mass* dictating the speed at which they fall.

Poor Quark's *universe* is now crushed, because they can't find their way home unless Farmer *Feynman* comes to the rescue.

(There, quantum physics where the most impressive science in there is gravity makes things go to the ground and electricity hurts. No, I don't know why I picked Rhode Island.)

Just picked up my first two vials of testosterone cypionate, with all the injection things. Still need a sharps box. Training to inject is next Thursday (so first dose then, and weekly subq to start from there. May switch to im injection later on; we'll see).

Y'all.

Eep.

(Thanks for all the support; this ain't done yet, this is still despite family wishes to the contrary. But I'm putting my mental health before family at this point. I've got everything I critically need to get out. If that relationship crashes and burns from here, I can tell it's for the best, because y'all are better support than they've ever been.)

A LITTLE BIT OF LUCK

Apparently my four-leaf-clover collecting has paid off. I just got a used Behringer C1 microphone used for $20 and a used Scarlett 18i6 for $70 (a full $200 less than they run for)! Catsitting for my sister over the summer paid off BIGTIME.

At this rate, it looks like I'll start testosterone sometime this semester, which makes me endlessly smile. So I'm going to just spend every spare minute recording vocals for an album I'm thinking will be ready to put up on Bandcamp sometime around the end of the year. I can play guitar and violin significantly better when I'm not simultaneously trying to remember lyrics, so I think I'll be good. I've written a MASSIVE number of songs that I haven't posted anywhere or sung at any filksings. One whole album of high-voice stuff, then probably never again. That's a delightful thought: have the record of where I came from so I can see how much things change.

Harvest

I know some of my followers are in the general southeast MA area. If any of y'all want fresh produce in the coming week, before next Sunday specifically, message me. My mother's garden has officially gone into overload and we've got probably five pounds of tomatoes per day, in addition to too many green beans, zucchini, and peppers. Also turnips that I can pull up. Also basil. Basically, want food and can travel a short distance to grab it, I will HAPPILY hand it off.

(Also, yes, am at parents' house for one more week. Then probably just a few more days ever.)

So yesterday, a random person on Twitter ([twitter.com profile] notalwaysweak ) posted the following:

"#Firefly (all episodes): 616
#Serenity (movie): 119
Total runtime: 735 minutes
Question: is there more filk, parody, and homage music out there than the show's actual runtime?
Answer: Let's find out together."

They began a Spotify playlist, but given that there's plenty of filk that's not on Spotify, they moved it to this spreadsheet at my suggestion. Suggestions to bring us up to the full runtime are welcome. Also, if anyone has the runtime for any unrecorded Firefly songs (some of Seanan's come to mind, but I know there are others), please add them!

...how have I not written a Firefly song yet?

TTTO Never Set the Cat On Fire

Considering I still haven't seen Good Omens, I'm doing a helluva job of filking Tennant's antics in relation to it. Song to be updated if/when I get more verses (aka if/when I hear about more of his antics).

Book list

So. Considering I've got to "move out" at some point soon, I'm doing the massive-book-sale thing. Most books are $1 USD, large nonfiction are $2, old ARCs are free, and buyer pays shipping. I'll be making another sheet in the file for comics and one for magazines (Smithsonian, National Geographic, Nat Geo History) once I get through the books. Link here to the Google spreadsheet.

Given that I'm currently catsitting for my sister and cousin in a relatively rural spot, there are MANY birds I don't get to see at the parents' house or at college that are here. Today, there's been a mated pair of cardinals, a blue jay, numerous seed foraging types, SO MANY robins, and what was likely a northern flicker that I only identified thanks to the Audubon website. (I played the calls for the cats, and they whipped around toward my computer, so there's definitely a northern flicker in the area even if that was mistaken identity.)

Also, I found a six-leaf clover and a five-leaf clover yesterday, with two more six-leaf, one more five-leaf, and three four-leaf clovers today, all in one corner of a small backyard that runs on the power lines. This was in about five minutes of searching yesterday and seven minutes today. I'm a little scared of how good at this I'm getting. I also REALLY need to filk this skill at some point.

Supposedly, there's a fox in the area as of a couple of days ago, but I haven't seen it yet. I know there are a few herds of deer; I've seen those before, just not this visit. I have, however, seen the resident under-porch chipmunk, in addition to too many squirrels to count.
